High calcitonin can cause conditions such as nausea, vomiting, facial flushing, and numbness and tingling in the hands. Other side effects include skin rash, bad taste in the mouth, abdominal pain, frequent urination, and shivering. Inflammatory reactions may also occur at the injection site. Antibodies can also be produced in the blood with long-term use, which generally do not affect the efficacy and remain effective after tolerance to animal-derived calcitonin and adult calcitonin has developed. Other adverse reactions include headache, chills, pressure in the chest, weakness, dizziness, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, eye pain, swelling of the lower extremities, and other such conditions, and the need to be alert to twitching of the extremities caused by low blood calcium.
