What is a child’s urine pH 9.0?

Urine pH 9.0 in children may be related to dietary habits, specimen problems, and pathologic factors.
Urine pH reflects the ability of the kidneys to regulate the acid-base balance of body fluids, the first few days after the birth of the child is strongly acidic due to the presence of urates in the urine, and later close to neutral or weakly acidic, acid-base degree of 5 to 7, if the child’s urinary acid-base degree of 9.0, indicating that the urine is alkaline.
1. Dietary habits: high protein diet can produce acidic urine, vegetarian food in the oxidation of organic acids in the body to produce less acidic substances, so that the relative increase in alkaline substances in the urine, so when the proportion of vegetables in the child’s diet is more, it can make the urine is alkaline.
2. Specimen problem: when urine is excreted for a long time, urea will be decomposed into ammonia and carbon dioxide under the action of urease, and ammonia is alkaline, so that the urine is alkaline.
3. Pathological factors: alkaline urine when small children have renal tubular acidosis, urinary tract infection. For example, in hyperkalemia, the epithelial cells of the distal tubules of the kidneys have more K”-Na” exchange, which competes for the inhibition of H”-Na”, resulting in insufficient H”-excretion, leading to alkaline urine.
There may be other causes for children’s urine alkalinity of 9.0. We suggest that they should go to the hospital in time for a complete examination to determine the cause of the disease and then give targeted treatment or therapy.
