The occurrence and development of sub-health states are often closely related to social and psychological factors, and the causes are complex, which makes it difficult to intervene in sub-health states by a single method, and requires comprehensive interventions to be effective. Based on its own characteristics, Chinese medicine has great advantages in subhealth adjustment, and has accumulated many effective methods. The birth of the concept of subhealth and the extensive and in-depth research on subhealth are the manifestation of people’s demand for health and focus on the quality of life. Today’s medicine is not only the science of curing diseases, but also the science of health. “Health”, “disease” and “sub-health” are the three objective stages in the process of human life activities: “health Health” and “disease” belong to the two ends of the spectrum, and “sub-health” belongs to the middle state of dynamic change, which is an interval between the two aforementioned. Research shows that the change from subhealth to health and from subhealth to disease is bi-directional and mostly reversible; subhealth is the budding and gestation stage of many common diseases in modern clinics, which can also be called “subclinical” stage. Timely correction of subhealth states can intercept the pathway of their migration to these diseases. Otherwise, the result will be the transformation of the sub-healthy person into a patient with related diseases, and even the possibility of developing a fatal disease such as cancer soon, which will eventually lead to serious physical damage or even death from the disease. If timely and comprehensive interventions are made to address the risk factors of sub-health, the potential threat of sub-health to human health can be greatly reduced, the incidence of many modern diseases can be reduced, the quality of life of people can be fundamentally improved, and the medical expenses of the whole society can be effectively reduced. Public health has become an important factor in determining the country’s economic development and influencing the competitiveness of future production factors. Some data show that people at the peak of their careers are at an increasing risk of being attacked by chronic diseases such as cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and tumor diseases. And most of these diseases are related to poor lifestyles. Tracking has shown that most of these patients have experienced a period of “subhealth” in their early years, which they have already experienced. These diseases could have been prevented, or at least delayed, by taking reasonable measures during the sub-health phase. However, due to the lack of health awareness and prevention among the population, the necessary preventive measures were not taken during the subhealth stage, which led to the eventual development of more serious illnesses. Therefore, it must be emphasized that the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases should start from daily life, starting from health education and intervention of subhealth. For example, research suggests that primary prevention of coronary heart disease, i.e., intervention of risk factors, is closely related to intervention of subhealth. Currently recognized risk factors for coronary heart disease include men, middle-aged and older adults over 40 years of age, family history of premature coronary heart disease in parents, smoking (>20 cigarettes/day), hypertension, hyperlipidemia, severe obesity (>30% overweight), and a clear past history of cerebrovascular or peripheral vascular obstruction. Among them, hypertension, high cholesterol and smoking were considered as the 3 most important risk factors for coronary heart disease. Except for gender, age and family history, all other risk factors are closely related to lifestyle, and most of them show a certain degree of reversible subhealthy state in the early stage without clinical symptoms, which can prevent or slow down the pathological process by actively intervening. Secondly, modern epidemiological studies show that through comprehensive and active interventions in subhealth states, not only can the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases and tumors, which are closely related to modern lifestyles, be reduced, but also improve the health level and health awareness of all people; and by changing poor lifestyles, eating properly, paying attention to physical exercise, and mastering scientific health care knowledge, it can also help Reduce the incidence of various other chronic diseases and infectious and epidemic diseases, greatly save medical and health resources, and significantly improve the quality of life of all people. In addition, comprehensive mind-body intervention for subhealth will help to improve the obvious shortcomings of today’s medicine, which only focuses on treating diseases but neglects the more important prevention of pre-morbid states, and thus strongly enhance the positive role of “big medicine” in the maintenance of people’s “big health”. Furthermore, it will provide a practical entry point for the academic development and expansion of Chinese and Western medicine, and for Chinese medicine to go global and lead the world in some fields. As early as the era of Nei Jing, Chinese medicine already established the important principle of “treating the untreated”. The “Suwen – Four Qi Tuning Shen” pointed out: “The sage does not treat the sick to treat the sick, not to treat the chaos to treat the chaos; …… the disease has become and after the medicine, chaos has become and after the treatment, as if thirsty and wear well, bucket and cast cone, not also late!” Since then, Chinese medicine has developed a series of specific methods and measures to treat the untreated diseases. Active intervention in sub-health is the modern version of the traditional and ideal of Chinese medicine – treating the untreated disease. It is bound to become a hot spot in the research of human health care and disease prevention in the 21st century, and also a key point in the future development of medicine, moreover, it is the frontier where Chinese and Western medicine are likely to intermingle. Second, the state adjustment – the advantages of Chinese medicine to adjust subhealth Chinese medicine theory does not have the concept of subhealth, but as early as two thousand years ago, the concept of “not yet sick” was mentioned. The regulation of subhealth in TCM is based on the consideration of prevention of diseases before they occur – prevention of microscopic diseases, early intervention, early treatment, interception and reversal, prevention of subhealth from developing into diseases, and promotion of the transformation of subhealth into health, which is also called “treating the root of the disease” in TCM. It is also known as “treating the root of the disease” in Chinese medicine, which is to protect the body’s positive energy, regulate the whole body, and treat the regulation principle of evidence-based treatment. Whether it is the modern subhealth or the theory of “untreated disease” proposed by TCM, it is the embodiment of the positive preventive medicine concept. The essence of sub-health is a reversible disorder of mind and body. In the process of subhealth adjustment, Chinese medicine attaches importance to the application of traditional Chinese medicine on the one hand, and the role of health care methods in maintaining health on the other. A scientific and healthy lifestyle, a stable and peaceful mental state, a natural climate change, a reasonable and balanced dietary structure, and moderate physical exercise are all important elements in the regulation of sub-health in Chinese medicine. In its long-term clinical practice, Chinese medicine has summarized the techniques of regulating emotion and mind, moderate work and rest, reasonable diet and careful living, and has developed various methods of state adjustment, such as food therapy, acupuncture, massage, qigong, channeling and internal and external drug therapy, which can be used selectively in the intervention of subhealth. It is worth mentioning that Chinese medicine has unique methods in treating subhealth, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. According to the characteristics of subhealth, non-pharmacological treatment should be the best choice. Commonly used non-pharmacological methods include acupuncture, massage, cupping, acupuncture points, ear pressure, chiropractic, abdominal massage, medicinal ironing, hot compress, medicinal bath, food therapy, medicinal food, medicinal tea, medicinal wine, breath regulation, qigong, essence fixation, anus lifting, teeth clasping, face rubbing, hair combing, etc.
