It is bitter, pungent and slightly cold in nature, mainly entering the liver, pericardium and bladder meridians, and has the functions of activating blood circulation and regulating menstruation, diuresis and swelling, and clearing heat and detoxification. It is mainly used for: 1) women with irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, incomplete dew, 2) edema caused by water and stasis, 3) bruises and injuries, stasis and swelling, sores and canker sores, etc. Motherwort contains alkaloids (epsomine, hydantoin, epsomidine), flavonoids, fatty acids and volatile oils. Modern pharmacology confirms that it has the effect of stimulating the uterus; protecting myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury; antiplatelet aggregation and lowering blood viscosity; vasodilatation and hypotension; and diuretic effect. The drug is generally used with caution in pregnant women.
