Is shortening a trans fat?

Shortening is not a trans fat, but contains trans fats. Shortening is a solid or fluid fat product with functional properties such as plasticity, emulsification, etc. made from refined animal or vegetable fats and oils, hydrogenated oils, or mixtures of the above fats and oils, processed with or without rapid cold kneading. Trans fats are found in shortening. Some research results show that trans fats can elevate blood levels of low-density lipoproteins and lower high-density lipoproteins, thus increasing the incidence of hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia and affecting the health of the cardiovascular system. Shortening is usually found in deep-processed foods such as cookies and cakes. It is recommended to reduce the consumption of fats and oils containing trans fatty acids such as shortening in daily life to maintain good health.
