Introduction to gastroesophageal reflux disease

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a disease in which the contents of the stomach flow back into the esophagus, causing discomfort and/or complications. The three types of GERD are non-erosive reflux disease (NERD), erosive esophagitis (EE), and Barrett’s esophagus (BE). Of the three forms of GERD, NERD is the most common, accounting for about 70% of GERD; EE can be combined with esophageal strictures, ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding; and BE may develop into adenocarcinoma of the esophagus.
