A dorsal foot fracture usually takes 2-4 weeks for the swelling to go down, as follows: First, if the dorsal foot fracture is not significantly displaced or mildly displaced, the swelling will go away in about two weeks for most patients after fixation and repositioning. Second, if the fracture is a severe comminuted instep fracture, the patient will need about four weeks for the swelling to go down. Regardless of the type of fracture, the patient should be treated with local cold compresses, braking, and immobilization, along with a brief compression bandage after diagnosis. After comprehensive treatment, the swelling will gradually subside. If the patient is able to cooperate with rehabilitation, the swelling will take even less time to subside. If the patient is not fully rehabilitated, the swelling will continue to flare up. In addition, the swelling may recur frequently until the fracture is completely healed.
