Surgery for cervical cancer removes the cervical tumor and some of the surrounding tissues, such as the uterus, ovaries, part of the vagina and lymphatic tissues in the pelvis. Patients with high risk factors for tumor recurrence, such as larger tumor, deeper infiltration, infiltration of tumor cells in the vasculature or lymph nodes, and tumor cells at the margins of surgical resection, etc., will need to undergo radiotherapy or chemotherapy after surgery in order to reduce the risk of their recurrence and improve the chance of cure. If the patient does not have the above risk factors after surgery, no further adjuvant therapy is needed.
