For patients with ankle fractures, in most cases they need to be immobilized in a neutral position using a cast. The foot needs to be kept in an upright position with no internal or external rotation or valgus. In addition, the long axis of the foot should be at 90 degrees to the long axis of the lower leg. However, in some special cases, the ankle should be immobilized in a position that is opposite to the tendency of the fracture to displace. For example, in the case of an avulsion fracture of the lateral ankle, the patient may need to be immobilized in an exostosis position to prevent pulling of the broken fracture fragments and thus promote healing. For patients who have undergone surgical treatment, the neutral position is often chosen for postoperative immobilization with the aid of a cast. In the process of using plaster for external fixation, patients must strictly follow the doctor’s instructions to maintain the final fixation position, and should not remove or unlock the relevant fixation device without authorization, in order to prevent the fracture from being re-displaced.
