Cold compress mainly causes vasoconstriction by local cooling, slows down blood flow, adjusts blood viscosity, reduces exudation, slows down nerve conduction, reduces pain, and also inhibits cellular activity, reduces cellular metabolic rate and bacterial viability. Therefore, cold compresses have the functions of reducing local congestion and bleeding, alleviating local pain, controlling the spread of inflammation as well as cooling down the temperature.
