A study by Bradley Behnke, a professor of physiology at the University of Kansas, found that well-timed and moderate exercise enhances the sensitivity to radiotherapy, the rationale for which may be related to the blood’s function in transporting nutrients and nutrition. “Tumors have some areas of low oxygen, which leads to radiotherapy resistance in tumor cells as well as promoting metastasis. Most solid tumors have hypoxic zones and they have a poor prognosis and short survival compared to non-hypoxic tumors. And exercise speeds up blood flow and improves blood supply to tumor lesions.” In the clinic, I often see some patients who do not like to exercise, and some others ask whether they can do housework, to which I reply: do not treat yourself as a patient, don’t stand if you can walk, don’t sit if you can stand, and don’t lie down if you can sit! Moderate amount of housework and activities are more conducive to physical recovery!
