What to look for in a barium enema

A barium enema is the injection of diluted barium from the anus with a small amount of gas and is often used to examine various occupying lesions in the large intestine. There are many precautions for barium enema examination. The day before the examination, only semi-liquid or liquid food should be eaten for lunch and dinner. Around 3:00 p.m. the day before the examination, drink about 1000 ml of water. After three hours, a laxative is to be taken. Two hours after taking the laxative, drink another 500ml of water. On the day of the examination, you can drink 200ml of sugar water, but you cannot eat any food. Two days before the barium enema, also do not take high-density drugs containing iron, sodium, iodine, etc. The day before the examination, do not eat food containing too much fiber or indigestible food. Before the examination, empty the stool and do a clean bowel wash before doing a barium enema. Also note that a barium enema should not be done when there is active bleeding in the colon.
