Hypertension belongs to the category of “dizziness” and “headache” in Chinese medicine. Chinese herbal formulas for lowering blood pressure by protecting the liver and brightening the eyes include Tianma Hookteng Drink, Hanxia Baijutsu Tianma Soup, Tongkou Xiexue Tang, Qiju Ju Dihuang Pills, and Jisheng Kidney Qigong Pills. Tongxiao and Blood Activation Tang: treating hypertension with blood stasis and obstruction of orifices; this formula is composed of red peony, chuanxiong, peach kernel, red jujube, safflower, old onion, fresh ginger and musk. Qi Ju Di Huang Wan (杞菊地黄丸): for the treatment of hypertension due to deficiency of yin in the liver and kidney; this formula consists of wolfberry, chrysanthemum, di Huang (地黄), cornelian cherry (茱萸), mudanpi (牡丹皮), Chinese yam (山药), poria, and zedoary. Its adverse effects and contraindications are not clear. 5. Jisheng Kidney Qi Pill: treating hypertension due to deficiency of kidney yang; this formula consists of Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum, Radix Paeoniae Miltiorrhizae, Poriae, Zeloda, Cinnamomum Cassiae, Pseudostellariae, Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, Phellodendron Bidentatae. Its adverse reactions and contraindications are not clear. The above drugs should be taken under the guidance of a doctor, and should not be used on their own to avoid adverse reactions.
