How to Decoct Frankincense Myrrh



Frankincense and myrrh have specific odors and should be shelled to remove the oil before decocting in a soup.

Frankincense is the resin of Boswellia serrata, a plant of the olive family, and myrrh is the resin of Hardingia serrata or Dictyostelium myrrha. Both contain volatile oil, after decoction will emit specific odor, not easy to take, so it should be concocted to remove the oil before decoction into the soup.

Frankincense has the effect of subduing swelling and muscle growth, activating blood circulation and resolving pain. Myrrh has the efficacy of subduing swelling and regenerating muscle, dispersing blood stasis and stabilizing pain. It can be used in the treatment of stagnation and pain, bruises, carbuncle (a kind of poisonous sores, acute suppurative diseases occurring on the body surface, limbs and internal organs), swelling and pain, and sores that do not close after prolonged ulceration. The adverse effects of this product have not been clarified, and should be used with caution for those with weak spleen and stomach and pregnant women.
