Upper arm fracture fixation

There are two general methods of fixation for upper arm fractures, the first is external fixation and the second is internal fixation. The external fixation includes external plaster fixation as well as external splinting. There are more internal fixation methods for upper arm fractures, including restrictive compression plates, locking plates, and power compression plates. In addition, there are intramedullary pins and flexible intramedullary pins for children. Therefore, the use of internal or external fixation needs to be determined according to the specific circumstances of the fracture. Conservative treatment uses external fixation, while surgical treatment requires internal fixation, but the specific choice of internal fixation depends mainly on the upper arm fracture site and the extent of the fracture.
