What does the RENAL score mean?

The RENAL score, also known as the Renal Measurement Scoring System, is one of the methods of describing the anatomical characteristics for renal tumors. The RENAL score was proposed by KU-TIKov et al. in 2009 and is an important basis for preoperative selection of surgical procedures in the population with limited renal tumors. The RENAL score is assessed in five main ways: the maximum diameter of the tumor (R), whether it is exophytic (E), the distance of the tumor from the renal sinus and collecting system (N), whether it is located in the ventral aspect of the kidney (A), and the position from the longitudinal axis of the kidney (L). The RENAL scoring system combines a range of variables to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the tumor’s anatomy, which can effectively guide the selection of clinical treatments and facilitate comparative studies. Patients with abnormal RENAL scores or discomfort should be seen promptly for examination and early treatment.
