Formulas combining Chuanwu and Pinellia include Cold Croup Pill, Zhongman Fenxie Tang, and Kaijie Miaogong Pill.
1. Cold Croup Pill is from “Zhang’s Doctor’s Guide to Medicine”, which is composed of ephedra, Sichuan peppercorns, Chuanwu, fine Xin, licorice, alum sheng, dental soap, Lianpi, hemixia qu, almonds, aster velvet, Chen bile Xing, and Fenghuanghua.
It has the efficacy of purging phlegm and dispersing cold, and is used for asthma with cold phlegm, characterized by cough with excessive phlegm, cold in the back, flaring up in the cold, chest and diaphragm plumpness (stomach distension and discomfort), and inability to lie down while leaning on one’s back. Contraindications and side effects are not clear.
2. Zhongman Fenxie Tang is from “Orchid Chamber Secret Collection”, which is composed of Chuanwu, Poria, Zeloda, Semixia, Wicker, Huanglian, Ginseng, Qingpi, Angelica sinensis, etc. It is used for treating cold hernia, Zhongman Cold Hernia, and cold stomach.
It is used for treating cold hernia, middle-fullness and cold distension, reversal of coldness in the limbs, plumpness under the heart (mainly referring to distension of the stomach), coldness in the abdomen, and inability to pass urine and feces. Side effects are not clear, avoid alcohol, greasy, cold and other things, abstain from sexual intercourse.
3. Kaijie Miaogong Pill is from Xuanming Lun, Volume 7, which consists of Jing Sanling, Semixia, Fennel, Dry Ginger, Chuan Wutou, Rhubarb, Shenqu, Malt, Ba Dou, Gui, and Petunia.
It has the efficacy of eliminating alcohol and food, promoting the circulation of qi and blood, and relieving stagnation. It is used for intestinal knot, pain and distension, congestion of the triple jiao, dryness and depression of the liver and kidneys, numbness of the waist and knees, and deviation from the right side of the head, etc. Contraindications and side-effects are not clear yet.
