Dietary considerations after rectal cancer surgery

Clinically, it is recommended that rectal cancer patients should simply drink water on the 1st-2nd days after surgery. On days 3-5, patients can eat liquid food, i.e. rice soup, congee and various kinds of food without dregs, such as egg soup, removing the dregs inside and only soup. On days 7-10, it is recommended to transition to a semi-liquid diet, which generally includes slightly cooked food such as egg custard and noodles. After two weeks, patients can eat normal diet, such as steamed buns, rolls, buns and other foods. Patients with rectal cancer cannot eat spicy and stimulating food after surgery, such as chili, mustard, raw onion, etc. These foods will stimulate the peristalsis of the intestine, which is not conducive to the healing of the wound. Do not eat too greasy food, such as fatty meat and fried food, which are high in fat and will aggravate the symptoms of rectal cancer and affect the liver function of patients. Don’t eat pickled foods, which contain a lot of nitrosamines and will aggravate rectal cancer.
