How long does it usually take for mastoiditis to heal?

How long it takes for a patient with mastoiditis to heal depends on the patient’s condition and treatment modality, and cannot be generalized. Papillitis is caused by further infection of the middle ear. If the patient’s symptoms are mild, with only slight pus flow or hearing loss, the patient can be treated conservatively with medication first. Antibiotics, first of all penicillins or cephalosporins, can be used to improve local drainage. It is also necessary to strengthen the protection of the ear and try to avoid water in the ear. Usually the inflammation will be effectively controlled after a week of medication and the patient will gradually heal. If the middle ear is not draining well, if there is significant pus flow, if the infection cannot be effectively controlled, or if there are suspected complications, a mastoidectomy should be performed, and it usually takes 1-2 months to fully recover after surgery. The surgical treatment should be treated with sufficient amount and course of antibiotics to completely control the recurrence of inflammation and the re-formation of abscesses, and the local area needs to be kept dry and clean after surgery to avoid infection. Therefore, when patients develop mastoiditis, it is important to seek active treatment in a timely manner to avoid the risk of delaying the condition and inducing intracranial infection.
