In young patients who experience occasional pain in the heart that lasts for a few seconds, this condition usually requires no specific treatment. Most of these cases are due to abnormal sensation of the chest wall nerves. Generally, these cases may be related to occasional excessive activity or emotional stress. There are also some unexplained abnormalities of sensation in the chest wall nerves, and patients should not be overly concerned if they occur only once in a while. If it occurs frequently, young patients may have cardiac neurosis due to prolonged mental stress. In most cases, the symptoms appear in a quiet state and gradually resolve after activity or distraction. In some cases, if the patient has recently had a cold or fever, the pain may be due to conditions such as intercostal neuritis or pleurisy.
