Perilla stalks, or perilla stalks. It has uses in the treatment of chest and diaphragm congestion, stomach and epigastric pain, belching (burping) and vomiting, and fetal restlessness.
Perilla stalk is the dried stem of Perilla frutescens, family Labiatae. It is pungent in flavor and warm in nature; it belongs to the lung and spleen meridians. Its function is to regulate qi and broaden the middle (regulating the qi of the spleen and stomach), relieve pain, and tranquilize the fetus. Contraindications to its use, adverse reactions are not clear.
It is used for treating chest and epigastric distention and fullness, nausea and vomiting due to stagnation of Qi in the middle Jiao. If it is cold, it is often used together with medicines to stop vomiting (to warm the spleen and stomach to treat vomiting caused by stomach cold) such as sand nuts and cloves; if it is hot, it is often used together with medicines to clear the stomach and stop vomiting such as Huang Lian (yellow dock) and Lugen (rehmanniae); if it is used in pregnancy where the fetal qi is reversed, with tightness in the chest and vomiting, or where there is restlessness in the fetus, it is often used with medicines to regulate the flow of qi and settle the fetus, such as sand nuts and chen pericarpi.
