6542, chemically known as racemic scopolamine, is an anticholinergic that is used clinically to relieve smooth muscle spasm, gastrointestinal colic, biliary spasm, and organophosphorus poisoning. Because it can relieve smooth muscle spasm, it is commonly used in the field of gynecology to treat dysmenorrhea with good results. Common side effects include causing dry mouth, flushing, transient blurring of things, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty in urination; most of these symptoms will disappear within 1-3 hours. The safety of this drug for pregnant and lactating women is not known and should be used with caution.
