What is the treatment for phlegm syndrome

The treatment of phlegm-drinking (pathological products formed by impaired water-liquid metabolism) syndromes is based on herbal tonics. It is generally categorized into spleen-yang weakness syndrome and drink retention in the stomach and intestines syndrome. The treatments of warming the spleen and resolving the drinks and attacking and expelling the watery drinks are used respectively. Clinical manifestations of Spleen-Yang Weakness syndrome include fullness and stuffiness in the chest and hypochondrium (a collective term for the chest and ribcage area), watery sounds in the stomach, a preference for warmth and fear of cold in the epigastric (abdominal) region, vomiting of clear water, thirst and lack of desire to drink or vomiting upon drinking, palpitations (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), loose stools, long and clear urine, white slippery fur on the tongue, and a thin and slippery pulse. It can be treated with Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang. The composition is Poria, Gui Zhi, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, and Glycyrrhiza Uralensis. The effect is to warm the spleen and promote diuresis. Symptoms such as fullness and pain under the heart, convenience in urination or intestinal tinnitus in the abdomen, difficulty in defecation, white tongue with greasy fur, and sunken and stringy pulse may be manifested if the drink is retained in the stomach and intestines.
