What does it mean to be short?

What is meant by short stature: Any person whose growth rate is less than 7 cm in infancy (under 3 years old), less than 4-5 cm per year in childhood (3 years old-puberty), less than 5.5-6.5 cm in adolescence, and less than 2 standard deviations from the average height of children of the same race, age and sex (refer to the height standard table) or below the third percentile of the growth curve is considered to be short in stature. Causes of short stature: In addition to genetics, nutrition, environment, sleep, mental factors, living habits and other factors, there are also many endocrine system diseases, etc. Common endocrine system diseases that cause short stature include: hypothyroidism, growth hormone deficiency, intrauterine growth retardation, Turner syndrome, idiopathic short stature, precocious puberty in children, etc. Even some intracranial tumors can also cause hormone secretion abnormalities and lead to short stature. Some cranial tumors can also cause abnormal hormone secretion and lead to short stature. The height of children is the result of the interaction between genetics and environment. As parents, we should create a good environment for children to give full play to their growth potential in order to make them grow as tall as possible. 1. If they are not fed well or get sick after birth, they may grow 5-6 cm less, or even less, and later they will be shorter than other children. Therefore, it is important to have adequate nutrition throughout infancy and early childhood, add supplementary food in time and prevent diseases. For the birth of a small sample of children more to strengthen nutrition and care, so that they accelerate growth. 2, we should pay attention to reasonable nutrition, do not be partial to eat, less snacks, 1-2 hours before meals it is best not to eat candy or drink, which is conducive to good appetite. Exercise often, because the secretion of growth hormone increases after exercise, which is beneficial to growth. The secretion of growth hormone in normal people is pulsatile and mainly occurs at night when they sleep. Sufficient sleep is also important for growth. Hazards of short stature in children 1. Introversion and emotional instability. Because of their short stature, more than 90% of children have low self-esteem and lack of self-respect, and their emotions are easily affected by the internal and external environment. 2. Poor communication and social withdrawal. In school-aged children, due to their short stature, they are afraid of being ridiculed by their classmates and are ashamed to interact with others, and become isolated and out of touch due to repression and withdrawal, and have poor relationships with their classmates, and sometimes have disciplinary behaviors and poor concentration, which even affect their studies. In the group life and social skills significantly lag behind normal children, there is a phenomenon of self-exclusion. 3. Depression. Short children are reluctant to communicate with others because of their low self-esteem, which leads to the inability to vent their inner pressure and express their will, and finally produces autism, which then develops into depression. Depressive disorder may lead to anxiety attacks or manic episodes in adolescence or adulthood. It has a great impact on future employment and marriage. If your child’s height is not ideal, experts suggest that parents should not rush to the doctor and blindly apply some so-called “height-enhancing drugs and supplies” without scientific basis; nor should they listen to the nature, but should go to a regular hospital as soon as possible to do relevant examinations to clarify the cause and grasp the best treatment time for children with short stature.
