Is mediastinal cyst surgery a major operation

Surgery for mediastinal cysts is a relatively major operation that needs to be performed under general anesthesia. Mediastinal cysts are generally congenital abnormalities of embryonic development resulting in the presence of a mass in the mediastinum of the chest cavity, which exerts pressure or invasion on the surrounding tissues, leading to chest tightness, chest pain, coughing, and dyspnea, etc. They are mostly found in children and adolescents, and in a few cases, they are goiter cysts, teratomas, thymus tumors, or cysts. The treatment of mediastinal cysts is generally based on surgery, with thoracoscopic surgical approach being the mainstay, but some patients may also require open chest for surgery. Both surgical approaches need to be performed under general anesthesia to remove the cyst and relieve the compression, which is a major surgery.
