Reed root is the fresh or dried rhizome of Reed, family Gramineae. It is sweet in flavor and cold in nature. It belongs to the lung and stomach meridians. It has the effect of clearing away heat and fire, generating fluids to quench thirst, removing vexation and vomiting, and diuretic. It is used in treating fever and thirst, lung-heat cough, lung carbuncle and pus spitting, stomach-heat vomiting and retching, and heat drenching (burning and stinging pain during urination, accompanied by frequent urination and urgency, and discomfort of pulling in the lower abdomen) and astringent pain.
In clinical practice, it can be combined with Bai Mao Gen for the treatment of lung-heat cough and thirst due to injury of fluids, with Zhu Ru for the treatment of stomach-heat vomiting, with Psyllium Hirsutum for the treatment of feverish drenching and astringent pain, and with Semen Coicis for the treatment of vomiting of pus and phlegm due to carbuncle of the lungs.
This drug is cold in nature and is contraindicated in people with cold spleen and stomach.
