Is it true that leeches cure glaucoma?

The treatment of glaucoma with leeches lacks scientific basis. Glaucoma is a common disease that jeopardizes the visual health of human beings, and it is currently the first irreversible blinding eye disease. Its onset is related to the elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP), which causes persistent pressure on the optic nerve, damaging the function of the optic nerve and causing optic nerve atrophy and visual field defects in patients. The only way to stop the progression of glaucoma is to control the intraocular pressure with IOP-lowering medication or surgery to prevent further aggravation of the damage. Leeches do not have IOP-lowering properties, so they cannot be used to treat glaucoma. Patients with glaucoma need to have their intraocular pressure monitored on a regular basis to observe fluctuations in intraocular pressure so that the doctor can make timely adjustments to the treatment program.
