A child’s fasting blood glucose of 4.4mmol/L is normal and generally does not require additional testing. Normal fasting blood glucose is 3.9-6.1mmol/L, and blood glucose two hours after a meal does not exceed 7.8mmol/L. Therefore, a child’s fasting blood glucose of 4.4mmol/L is considered normal, and does not need to be checked additionally. Diabetes is diagnosed when a child’s blood glucose level meets any of the following criteria: typical diabetic symptoms and a blood glucose level of ≥11.1 mmol/L at any time after a meal; fasting blood glucose ≥7.0 mmol/L; and a blood glucose level of ≥11.1 mmol/L in a 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test. Children with abnormal blood glucose levels are advised to seek prompt medical attention.
