Things to know about glucose tolerance test

Patients with mildly elevated blood sugar (elevated but not meeting the criteria for diabetes) should have their glucose tolerance checked to assist in the diagnosis. The requirements for checking glucose tolerance are: unrestricted diet (not less than 150 grams of sugar/day) and normal physical activity in the early morning after 2-3 days, drugs affecting glucose metabolism should be avoided, and fasting for 8-14 hours before the test, during which time water may be consumed. Practice: Fasting blood glucose is taken first, and the patient drinks 250-300ml of liquid containing 75g of glucose powder within five minutes, and blood glucose is measured after taking sugar.
