Does Bitovir Resistance Mean There’s No Drug Available?

The generic name for Bitovir is bictegravir-emtricitabine-propofol tenofovir tablets, and the presence of resistance does not mean that there is no drug available. Bitovir is a combination tablet of propofol tenofovir, bictegravir-emtricitabine-propranol tenofovir (bictegravir-emtricitabine-tenofovir alafenamide, BIC/FTC/TAF). If resistance occurs, the physician needs to evaluate the patient’s prior antiretroviral history, as well as the results of prior and current genotypic and/or phenotypic resistance testing to determine which drugs may be fully or partially active. Other factors can influence the choice of antiviral regimen, such as renal or cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and chronic hepatitis B virus infection. However, such factors need not be a major concern if multiple drug-resistant strains are limiting treatment options. Treatment of HIV infection is physician-directed, and it is recommended that patients who develop drug resistance go to the hospital and be evaluated by a physician for other drug options.
