What’s the difference between fluoride and fissure sealing

Fluoride application and fissure sealing are both preventive measures to enhance the resistance of teeth to caries, but the two measures differ in age, application site and operation procedure.
1. Age: The age of fluoride application is for both children and adults, while fissure sealing is carried out at the stage of reproductive development of children’s teeth. Therefore, the two ages are different.
2. Application site: Fossa sealing mainly targets young permanent molars, such as the first permanent molars that erupt behind the molar teeth after the age of 6 weeks. Fluoride can be applied on the surface of all teeth, so the two applications are different.
3. Procedure: Fluoride application is to apply fluoride foam or fluoride coating on the surface of teeth to achieve anti-caries ability, while fissure sealing is to observe the fissure first, use acid etching agent to etch the surface of teeth and finally apply fissure sealant on the surface of teeth.
Patients need to choose between fluoride application and fissure sealing with their own specific situation and under the guidance of the doctor.
