The diagnosis of Tourette’s syndrome, or Tourette’s syndrome, can be made by referring to the five diagnostic criteria of the American Diagnostic Manual of Mental Disorders. The patient has an onset before the age of 18. There are multiple episodes in a day, nearly every day or intermittent episodes over a period of more than a year, and there has never been a period of 3 consecutive months without an episode. There are multiple movements and one or more occurrences of tics during the illness. It severely interferes with the patient’s social, academic, or other activities and causes great distress. Tics are not a direct physiologic response due to stimulants or other diseases (viral encephalitis, Huntington’s disease). When tics occur promptly go to the hospital to identify the cause and choose the appropriate treatment under the guidance of the doctor.
