A hernia is formed by the protrusion of tissue from the body cavity through a weak area in the abdominal wall and requires surgical treatment. The approach is to repair and strengthen the weak point. Traditionally, the weak point is closed by direct suturing. However, this results in significant local pain, high tension, a long hospital stay, and a tendency to recur. Imagine if the weak area is repaired with a piece of material that heals with the body, then local tension is greatly reduced, pain is reduced, recurrence rates are lower, and hospital stays are shorter. This healing material used to repair the defect is the hernia patch. A good hernia patch is one that heals with the body, does not cause rejection, has little foreign body sensation, does not shrink easily, and is not completely absorbed by the body.
