Don’t forget to give your head a medical check-up

With the increase of health awareness, people gradually pay attention to medical checkups. Medical checkups can detect early lesions and deal with problems in the bud as early as possible to avoid huge losses or irreversible states. In general physical examinations, the examinations that are often done include heart, lung and abdominal related examinations. Specific examinations include carotid ultrasound, vertebral artery ultrasound, chest CT, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, hepatobiliary, pancreatic and spleen ultrasound, dual kidney ureteral bladder ultrasound, abdominal CT, gastrointestinal microscopy, etc. What underlying diseases are normally present, and then in-depth examination of this disease-related content. Because the incidence of brain diseases is low, the physical examination items rarely involve cranial physical examination, although the incidence is low but the harm is huge, so it is strongly recommended to include cranial brain-related content in the physical examination, early detection and early treatment, prevention is better than cure. Cranial diseases with high incidence include: brain aneurysm and brain tumor Intracranial aneurysm: it is a bulging bag on the cerebral blood vessel, which has no symptoms if it does not rupture, but once it ruptures, the death rate and disability rate are high. If detected by physical examination and treated when it is not ruptured, it will be saved. A significant portion of the strokes we hear about are caused by ruptured aneurysms and bleeding. Uncle Benjamin Chiu’s aneurysm ruptured without warning, but it was well treated and did not cause any major impact. Physical examination methods: MRA, CTA. Brain tumor: It is a general term for a large group of diseases. It specifically includes glioma, meningioma, pituitary tumor, brain metastases, etc. Glioma: It is the most common primary tumor that grows inside the brain and cannot be cured yet. The most effective treatment is early detection and early enlargement and removal, which has the possibility of cure. There is no symptom in the early stage of the tumor, and after a long clinical period, the tumor starts to make waves, which may cause epilepsy, headache, limb movement disorder, speech disorder and so on. At this time, the tumor is already in the progressive stage when it is detected by examination, and the lesion is often huge and involves functional areas, so even if it is actively treated, the prognosis is difficult to guarantee. Glioma has more family members and the prognosis varies greatly. It is the most difficult of all brain tumors to deal with and requires the most scientific thinking. The son of current U.S. President Joe Biden and Taiwanese writer Li Ao both died of glioma. Meningioma: A common tumor on the outside of brain tissue, mostly slow growing. 75% are benign tumors and 25% are malignant. Total excision of benign meningioma equals cure, but a portion of meningioma is not destined for total excision and recurrence is likely. Malignant meningiomas require postoperative radiation therapy and have a high probability of recurrence. The detection of smaller meningiomas on physical examination facilitates the development of a scientific management strategy with a small cost and good prognosis. Pituitary (adenoma) tumors: benign tumors with mostly good prognosis. There are many pituitary tumor subtypes, some of which have endocrine function and can cause symptoms earlier, such as prolactin-type pituitary tumor, which can cause amenorrhea and lactation, and ACTH-type pituitary tumor, which can cause full moon face, buffalo back and hypertension. Growth hormone pituitary tumors can cause hypertrophy of the fingertips. Larger tumors can cause visual field defects. A small number of pituitary tumors can be treated medically, but most require surgery. Early detection can be minimally invasive transnasal surgery. In larger lesions, the involvement of more structures makes surgery more difficult and may require craniotomy, or multiple surgeries. The resulting neurological dysfunction is difficult to recover, etc. Brain metastases: It is the most common tumor in the skull. The first incidence of cerebellar tumors in adults is metastases. The pathological type of metastases is the same as the type of primary tumor, multiple common, and there are dilemmas in management due to the existence of blood-brain barrier. Once intracranial metastases are present, they need to be managed promptly. Most of the management requires multidisciplinary collaboration. The best medical checkup for brain tumor is cranial MRI. We suggest you to add cranial MRI to your next medical checkup to give an extra protection to your own health.
