The cause of the swelling should be identified and treatment to reduce the swelling should be given. If the swelling is caused by heart failure, cardiotonic and diuretic agents such as oral furosemide, spironolactone or intravenous tolarsemide, or oral tolvaptan can be applied. If the swelling is caused by renal insufficiency, such as nephrotic syndrome, which is caused by hypoalbuminemia, intravenous infusion of human albumin is needed to perform volume expansion and diuretic treatment. If the swelling is combined with oliguria or anuria, renal replacement therapy, such as hemodialysis or hemofiltration, is required. If the swelling is caused by abnormal thyroid function, such as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, the patient needs to take oral thyroid hormone, such as oral eugenol, to replenish the hormone in the body and treat the symptoms.
