What to do if you have low parathyroid hormone

Low parathyroid hormone can be caused by low secretion of parathyroid hormone. Treatment includes calcium supplementation, vitamin D and its derivatives, and magnesium supplementation.
1. Calcium supplements: long-term supplementation should be taken, mainly calcium carbonate, to maintain the blood calcium close to the normal level is appropriate. Dietary attention should be paid to the intake of high-calcium and low-phosphorus foods, such as soybeans, chicken, beef, eggs, milk, etc. It is recommended to eat more soybeans, chicken, beef, eggs and milk.
2. Vitamin D and its derivatives: in patients with mild parathyroidism, after supplemental calcium and phosphorus limitation therapy, serum calcium can be basically normalized and symptoms controlled. Patients with severe symptoms should use vitamin D preparation as the secondary drug for hypocalcemia in parathyroidism. Osteotriol is commonly used.
3. Magnesium supplementation: for those with hypomagnesemia, magnesium can be supplemented under the guidance of doctors according to the condition, commonly 25% of magnesium sulfate 10-20 ml added to 5% dextrose saline 500 ml intravenous drip, the dosage depends on the degree of low magnesium. In the process of magnesium supplementation, blood pressure should also be closely monitored, generally after the correction of hypomagnesemia, hypocalcemia may also be improved.
Low parathyroid hormone patients are recommended to consult a regular hospital in a timely manner, under the guidance of a physician standardized treatment. Low parathyroid hormone should not be blindly used, the above drugs need to follow the doctor’s instructions.
