Neurosis is a general term for a group of disorders, and there used to be expressions such as neurosis, neurasthenia, and phytodysfunction that speak of this type of disorder. They have many common features in terms of the manifestations and causes of their onset. In terms of the overall manifestation of neurosis, they can often experience a number of adverse emotions (tension, restlessness, fear, depression, etc.) and a variety of functional somatic discomfort. They are either haunted by these dysphoric emotions or bothered by some physical discomfort, and spend their days immersed in a world of painful self-induced discomfort. Most of their suffering can be understood by normal people, and their behavior is within the limits of what is allowed by social norms. After the disease, patients’ normal life and work are often affected. To get rid of their suffering, they themselves will urgently seek treatment, but systematic medical examinations often fail to reveal diagnostic findings, and eventually the internist will recommend that the patient seek help from a psychiatric hospital or a psychiatric outpatient clinic. From the point of view of the onset, some painful life experiences in early childhood or adolescence, or defective parenting environment, and the personality traits formed on this basis are internal causes, such as excessive pursuit of perfection, great attention to minutiae, stereotypes, or over-dependence and excessive concern for others’ opinion of them. External causes are often the pressure and difficulties in life and work, which are also often referred to as mental stimuli, such as being laid off, losing love, failing in college entrance exams, marital discord, tension with leaders or colleagues, etc. Some mental stimuli may not be considered as stimuli to the general public, but they may be significant to the patients. At present, according to the diagnostic classification of mental disorders in China, neurosis mainly includes anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, phobias, and somatoform disorders. Generally speaking, the treatment of neurotic disorders includes medication and psychotherapy. The specific treatment method to be used is determined by the doctor according to the patient’s condition.
