Skull Repair Materials

Cranial repair is a common kind of skull defect surgery, and the material used in cranial repair is very important. At present, the preferred material for skull repair surgery is polyether ether ketone (peek) material, the physical and chemical properties of this material are comparable with the human body’s own skull performance, good tissue compatibility, elastic modulus is similar to that of autologous bone, stable chemical properties, high temperature and high pressure resistance, strong percussion resistance, does not affect the post-operative radiological examination, and good thermal insulation, also does not appear cold and heat sensitive reaction. As early as thousands of years ago, human beings began to try to repair skull bone. After thousands of years of development, cranial bone repair materials have experienced from experiencing from animal bone and autologous bone to light apatite and calcium phosphate bone cement materials, then to metal materials, titanium mesh, and finally to the advanced polyether ether ketone materials today, which can be said to have reached a considerable height. We use polyetheretherketone (PEEK), an advanced material for skull repair surgery, to achieve relatively good results. This material is a 3D reconstruction based on the patient’s cranial CT data, highly restores the anatomical structure of the skull, precisely anastomoses the defect area, and this special material can be fused with the autologous skull, blending into one, making it a very good cranial repair material.
