Do myopia and presbyopia co-exist?

Myopia and presbyopia have the potential to co-exist, and when patients experience changes in their eye vision, they need to have a timely eye exam to avoid continued vision loss. Myopia is a refractive error and presbyopia is a physiologic manifestation of aging; the two are not in conflict and therefore can co-exist. Myopia is a blurring of vision caused by parallel light rays focusing before the retina, and can be affected by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, with a family aggregation. The patient has blurred vision when looking at distant objects and normal vision when looking at near objects. Presbyopia is caused by the physiological weakening of eye regulation due to ageing, making near vision difficult and not sustainable, requiring stronger illumination when reading, and is usually unavoidable; improving lifestyle habits can help to slow down the onset of the disease. Patients with both myopia and presbyopia are advised to seek prompt medical attention to evaluate their condition and follow the doctor’s instructions.
