How long does a sputum culture take?

Sputum cultures usually take 2 to 5 days or even longer to produce results. Sputum culture is mainly for disease-causing pathogens in sputum, and it takes 2~5 days to perform sputum culture. Since the growth of pathogenic bacteria is relatively slow, the initial test may not yield accurate results, so continuous culture is needed before testing. For positive pathogen samples, drug sensitivity tests are needed to detect the types of drugs that are sensitive to the pathogens, and it takes at least 3~5 days to get the results, or even longer, for example, the culture of common tuberculosis divergent bacilli takes 1~2 weeks. In addition, due to differences in testing conditions, staffing and other differences in testing organizations, the specific time also varies, specific to the local testing time shall prevail.
