Adenoids refer to the pharyngeal tonsils, while tonsils generally refer to the palatine tonsils, both belonging to the lymphatic tissue of the pharynx. Adenoids, also known as pharyngeal tonsils, are located at the junction of the top and back wall of the nasopharynx, and have an uneven surface that resembles half a peeled orange. Adenoids are present at birth and generally degenerate and atrophy after the age of 10 years. The tonsils, generally referred to as the palatine tonsils, are the largest of the pharyngeal lymphoid tissues. They are located in the triangular tonsillar fossa between the palatoglossal arch and the palatopharyngeal arch on both sides of the oropharynx, and can become physiologically enlarged at age 6-7 due to lymphoid hyperplasia, and then gradually atrophy after middle age. If there is any discomfort, it is recommended to consult a doctor promptly for diagnosis and treatment.
