Right-sided pterygoid sinus cysts that are asymptomatic, or when symptomatic and treated promptly, are usually not serious. If a right sided bulky pterygoid sinus cyst is left untreated, it is more serious.
Right pterygoid sinus cysts are cysts that occur in the right pterygoid sinus, including mucous cysts and plasma cysts, of which those that occur in the pterygoid sinus are more common as mucous cysts. Generally, there are no obvious symptoms in the early stage of pterygoid sinus cyst, and the condition is not serious at this time. With the growth of the swelling, a series of clinical symptoms may occur, and the severity increases.
1. The side wall of the pterygoid sinus is close to the optic nerve foramen and the supraorbital fissure, and the compression of the cyst can cause the eyeball to protrude and press the orbital cusp, resulting in blindness, paralysis of the ocular muscles, ocular sensory disturbances and pain, which is called the orbital cusp syndrome.
2. Cysts can also collapse on their own many times, and repeated interstitial rhinorrhea. Pterygoid sinus cysts can be seen in the olfactory fissure at the swelling. When the cyst is large, symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose and loss of smell may also occur.
3. If the cyst increases in size and presses the nearby cerebral nerves, migraine of varying severity and pain or numbness behind the eyes, around the eyes, on the top, in the occipital area, in the frontal area and in the cheeks may occur; when a large amount of secretion is discharged from the nasal cavity, the headache may be temporarily relieved. If pterygoid sinus cyst compresses the pituitary gland, endocrine dysfunction may occur, such as amenorrhea, hypogonadism, dysuria and so on.
4. If the cyst becomes infected and forms a pus cyst, there may be fever, generalized discomfort, headache, etc., which may also lead to serious intraorbital and intracranial complications.
It is recommended that patients with right pterygoid sinus cysts need to consult a doctor in time, and the doctor will judge whether it is serious or not according to the patient’s condition.
