Fetal cord winding is when the umbilical cord is wrapped around the fetus’ neck or other parts of the fetus’ body, but mostly around the neck. Its formation may be related to excessive cord length, excessive amniotic fluid, small fetus, excessive fetal activity and excessive activity. It may lead to: 1) obstructed descent of the fetal previa; 2) fetal distress; 3) fetal heart rate variability; 4) abnormal cord blood flow; 5) fetal skin compression during natural delivery. Generally speaking, ultrasound examination reveals a U-shaped cut for one week, a W-shaped cut for two weeks, and a serrated cut for three weeks or more. If the clinical diagnosis of umbilical cord entanglement is made, monitoring should be strengthened during delivery and a cesarean section should be given in time in case of fetal distress.
