Under normal circumstances, a minor ankle fracture can be out of bed for a month or so to walk, but need crutches to move down to the ground, not completely weight-bearing. Even if the fracture is minor, the healing process is a long one, and the fracture will not heal completely in a month or so, so you need crutches to move around, otherwise it will affect the patient’s healing process and may even lead to displacement of the fracture. Patients with minor ankle fractures should be treated conservatively, with strict external fixation in a brace or plaster, close observation of the blood flow and sensation in the distal end, attention to the tightness of the external fixation, vigilance to the possibility of osteo-fascial compartment syndrome, and active elevation of the affected limb above the heart. The patient will recover slowly with the application of medications to activate blood circulation and promote fracture healing.
