Sponge kidney may trigger hyperparathyroidism. The prognosis of the disease is mostly good, but if it is not actively treated, some of them may cause kidney damage to progress due to recurrent urinary stones and urinary tract infections, which in turn may trigger hyperparathyroidism.
Sponge kidney is a congenital developmental abnormality disease, renal function is generally unaffected, and it is more common in young and middle-aged people, often accompanied by urinary tract infections, stones, nocturia, and other symptoms of decreased renal tubular concentrating function. If not treated aggressively, about 10% of the patients may progress to kidney damage due to recurrent urinary tract stones and urinary tract infections, which may in turn trigger hyperparathyroidism.
Hyperparathyroidism can be secondary to chronic kidney disease, especially in patients on maintenance dialysis, symptoms can be manifested as generalized bone pain, calcium, phosphorus and bone metabolism disorders, elevated parathyroid hormone, etc., which can be treated by lowering phosphorus and calcium supplementation, such as lanthanum carbonate, sevelamer, paricalcitol and so on.
If the condition of sponge kidney patients changes, it is recommended to go to regular hospitals in time and follow the doctor’s instructions for standardized treatment. The medication should be used in accordance with the doctor’s prescription, do not self-medicate.
