Swelling of the face is recognized by Chinese medicine as wind and water, dampness and toxicity, and kidney yang weakening. 1. Wind and water fight: clinical manifestations are swelling of the eyelids, followed by swelling of the limbs and the whole body, which is rapid; those favoring wind-heat are accompanied by redness, swelling and pain in the throat; the tongue is red, and the pulse is floating and slippery; those favoring wind-cold are accompanied by coldness, coughing and wheezing; the tongue is thinly coated with white fur, and the pulse is floating and slippery or floating and tight. The treatment is Yue maidservant plus artichoke soup, in order to dredge the wind and clear the heat, promote the lung to move the water. 2. Dampness-poison infiltration: clinical manifestations include swollen eyelids, extending to the whole body, shiny skin, red urine, sores, or even ulcers, and malignant wind and fever; the tongue is red, the moss is thin and yellow, and the pulse is floating or slippery. Treatment with ephedra and forsythia and red bean soup combined with five flavors disinfectant drink, in order to promote lung detoxification, diuresis and swelling. 3. Kidney Yang Weakening: Clinical manifestations include recurrent edema, face and body swelling, even below the waist, depressed and unable to rise when pressed, lumbar soreness and cold pain, and cold extremities (cold extremities, even to the elbows and above the knees); the tongue is pale and fat, the moss is white, and the pulse is weak or sluggish and feeble. Treatment with Zhen Wu Tang to warm the kidneys and assist yang, and to transform qi to move water (to promote the movement of qi, thus promoting the movement of water and liquid). Specific medications need to be used according to the patient’s physique and condition to identify and treat the patient in order to flexibly mix and match, do not blindly use medication.
