Is it normal for a baby to be tested at 42 days with 7.2 jaundice?

Jaundice of 7.2mg/dl at 42 days is abnormal, suggesting pathologic jaundice. When the total serum bilirubin of the newborn exceeds 7mg/dl, jaundice may appear visible to the naked eye, physiological jaundice mostly subsides in 5~7 days after birth, the latest not more than 2 weeks. If the jaundice does not subside after 42 days, it is suggested to be pathologic jaundice. Causes of pathologic jaundice include excessive bilirubin production, hepatic bilirubin metabolism disorder, and bile excretion disorder. This child is most likely to have breast milk jaundice, try to stop breastfeeding for 1~2 days, jaundice can be significantly reduced. If jaundice does not decrease when breastfeeding is stopped, it is suggestive of other causes of pathologic jaundice, and prompt medical attention should be sought. If the baby is still jaundiced after 42 days, he/she should go to the hospital in time for treatment under the doctor’s guidance.
