How to leave a urine culture with an indwelling catheter

It is recommended that urine culture specimens be obtained from patients after indwelling catheterization, as the specimens are relatively clean and sterile. Before indwelling catheterization, disinfect the perineal area and urethral orifice, insert the urethral catheter with sterile gloves, release the urine at the front of the urethral catheter, and leave the urine in the middle section for bacterial culture, so that the urine specimens obtained are relatively clean and sterile, with less human interference or external contaminating factors. For patients with long-term indwelling catheters who need urine culture, urine should not be taken directly from the drainage bag for urine culture, but should be removed from the joint between the drainage tube and the bag, and the urine in the front part should be released after flushing the catheter with saline, and the urine in the middle part should be taken for bacterial culture. If the catheter is left in place for more than a week and a urine culture specimen needs to be taken, it is recommended that the urinary catheter be replaced in an aseptic state and the middle segment of the urine be kept in the new urinary catheter for bacterial culture.
