After ligament tear surgery, most patients are able to walk while wearing a brace or crutches 14 days after surgery, and full recovery generally takes about 3 months to 6 months.
1. The first 2 weeks after ligament tear surgery is the most critical time in the recovery process, and is also the most fragile time, and does not allow for walking. At this time, the joint with the torn ligament may experience pain and fluid buildup, and cold compresses or cold therapy may be used to aid in recovery.
2. Two to five weeks after ligament tear surgery, it is usually possible to walk for a short period of time while wearing a brace or other supportive device. At this time, it is recommended that the affected joint be exercised regularly throughout the day and supplemented with nutrients in order to promote faster healing.
3. Five weeks to three months after ligament tear surgery, the injured ligament and nearby muscles will continue to heal and become stronger, at which point the patient can engage in activities such as swimming and bicycling.
4. Between 3 and 6 months after ligament tear surgery, you should be able to gradually return to your normal level of daily activities.
It is recommended that the patient visit the orthopedic department of the hospital for a comprehensive evaluation and follow the doctor’s instructions regarding the exact duration of walking after ligament tear surgery.
