Notes on free joints

Over the years, we have been carrying out patient rescue activities and have provided hundreds of free artificial joints for patients, with good results. However, we have found some problems, most notably the following two problems: First, the shape of the patient’s bones is not suitable for free joints. Our patients often have had the disease for a long time, the bone is thin, the bone marrow cavity is thick, and the free joints often do not have a large model. I have seen patients who have had free joints in other hospitals, some with small femoral stems, and some with bone cement tacked on. This may not be a problem in a few years, but it is a problem in about 10 years. Second, the patient is young and not suitable for free joints. Nowadays, all free joints in hospitals are made in China, and they are the most basic “plastic-lined to metal-headed” artificial joints, which should be used with caution because they rarely last more than 10 years for middle-aged people because of their high activity level. For patients who have received free joint replacements at our hospital in the past, we have always adhered to the above principles, so the results have been excellent. For those patients who are not suitable, we patiently explain to them how to choose the artificial joint. Whether it is the best “ceramic-lined to ceramic-headed” joints (four generations of large heads) or the most common “plastic-lined to metal-headed” joints, patients do not experience any discomfort in the first few years after surgery, so people often choose cheaper joints to save money and are complacent about it. This is why people often choose the cheaper joints to save money and become complacent about it, not realizing that this is the root of the problem and that they will have to face the pain and expense of a second or third surgery. The choice of artificial joints needs to be made very carefully, based on age, bone quality and condition, and the most suitable one. Do not be greedy for cheapness and do not believe in false propaganda. Today, I saw a patient who received a “free” joint in another hospital. Due to the wrong choice of prosthesis, the joint sank and loosened in less than a year, so I am writing a small article to remind you.
